Interactive activities in TESOL course - TESOL

One thing surprised many people. When they learned TESOL and really experienced the classroom of English as a second language, it was so different from what they imagined or were used to. In English as a foreign language classroom, TESOL teachers' students bring knowledge, education, beliefs and views into the classroom. TESOL teachers can learn more based on their knowledge. The planning method of the course is to let students participate in the teaching materials, course contents and each other, so as to enjoy the most effective course as much as possible.

Interactive classroom activities have been proved to make it easier for language learners to remember language. If language activities involve a certain degree of cognitive challenges, learners are actually more likely to learn. In other words, if learners are passive observers in the classroom, their brains will not participate as actively in every step of the learning process. In addition, when TESOL teachers master the knack of planning interactive activities, you will find that it becomes easier and easier over time.

Here are some of TESOL teachers' favorite English classroom interactive activities.

1. Brainstorming

This is a good simple activity to start any course, which can be done in pairs, groups or as an open class. At the beginning of the class, TESOL teachers give students a word or phrase related to the topic of the class, even just the topic itself. Then, students must brainstorm as many words or phrases as possible because they know the relevant topics, and they must do this as soon as possible without thinking.

2. Information exchange

When dealing with reading or listening texts, TESOL teachers organize activities so that each student in the group can only get some information. In order to complete the task, they need to talk to other members of the group and exchange information with them. In other words, their discussion task is purposeful, not just speaking for practice. TESOL teachers divide a reading or listening text into three parts and divide the class into groups of three, which is easy to do. Even better, it turns reading or listening into a more communicative and interactive course.

3. Peer correction

In the simplest interactive classroom activities, peer correction is the simplest. After the language activity, TESOL teacher asks students to mark another student's homework instead of marking it as a classroom activity. Therefore, first of all, give students time to participate in activities in their personal capacity. Then, TESOL teachers ask them to discuss their answers with their peers, check whether they have the same answers, or explain the answers to their peers. Before reviewing the answers in class, give them the opportunity to do so. TESOL teachers will find that as a reward, your students are more confident in giving the answers!

4. Students as teachers

An obvious way to make TESOL teachers' classrooms more student-centered is to organize activities so that your students act as teachers, not you. Assign language points to student groups and ask them to teach to the whole class. Make sure TESOL teachers have enough time to prepare and don't forget to deal with any understanding problems afterwards. This is a way to modify the language at the end of the semester or at the end of the course.

5. Review the game

When TESOL teachers conduct review exercises in class, they should not use separate tasks, but turn them into classroom games. There are many different review games that can be played in class. These games will turn your course into a more interactive experience.

As you can see, TESOL teachers have many different interactive activities that can make the English classroom more interactive. By doing so, your students will participate more in the course and give them more autonomy, which will make them more engaged, involved and active.
