Three ways TESOL teachers encourage students to speak in class - TESOL

When most people think of the classroom environment, they imagine a teacher standing in front of the classroom, behind him is a textbook and a whiteboard, lecturing to the students. TESOL classroom is completely different, because learning a language requires a more communicative and interactive teaching method, which requires students to speak more than teachers.

For a teacher, it sounds like a dream, but it is a double-edged sword. You may meet some students who never stop talking and dominate the class. These scenes need to be handled effectively to avoid interference to the class. A more difficult scene is that the whole class doesn't say a word. Silence can be deafening, but we have some tips to help you deal with this situation:

1. Nomination - bring a ball like prop or other object that can be used as a "microphone" to class. When TESOL teacher wants one of the students to speak, throwing the ball to them is nominating them. Although this may make them uncomfortable, it at least means that everyone in the classroom has an equal opportunity to speak and participate in the classroom. This is also a good way to control those talkative students.

2. Wait - don't let silence interrupt you and make you yield. If no one else is talking, you start talking. If TESOL teachers wait long enough, someone will eventually say it. Some cultures may feel that speaking in class is rude or not allowed, so it's also important to remember. It is important for TESOL teachers to encourage students to participate in class discussions, and they know that this is what is expected of them in TESOL class.

3. Talk and understand - TESOL teachers should not divide students into small groups. Speaking in front of a few people is far less daunting. It is also a good way to encourage students to talk and understand each other. After a few minutes, TESOL teacher rearranged the group and asked them to discuss the same topic or its extension with the freshmen.

Remember, you are someone who already knows how to speak English. It is your student who needs to practice and should do most of the dialogue. If TESOL teachers find themselves speaking more than your students in class, try these skills, and you will soon find that you can't insert a word!
